I never realized the power of the garfield without garfiled.
My sources (my own thoughts) tell me this was original idea of the Jim Davis comic, but after some focus groups they found it would have a broader audience by adding a cat.
However, the essence of exploration of the underside of life is captured best without the "fat cat", perhaps this is another existential message layered in this comic.
